The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has secured funding of 5.5 million Euro from the European Union to address malnutrition in five north Sindh districts. The 24-month action, spanning August 2023 to July 2025, will target civil society organizations, health staff, community outreach workers, and caregivers.
The beneficiaries include under-5 children, pregnant and lactating women, and caregivers. The action will improve local CSOs' capacity to lead policy dialogue, develop nutrition-sensitive programming, and enable communities and outreach health workers to effectively screen and refer malnourished children to outpatient therapeutic programs.
The IRC will collaborate with the government health department and nutrition actors to improve nutrition-related skills, supply chain management, facility-based treatment, and community outreach. Key intervention areas include networking with local and national-level organizations, enhancing internal management capacity, improving nutrition-related skills and programme delivery, increasing access to nutrition health services, strengthening accountability mechanisms, revitalizing the District Coordination Committee for Nutrition, implementing small nutrition-specific projects, and increasing awareness about malnutrition issues.
Strengthened capacities of local Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in the nutrition sector as actors for promoting responsive governance and service delivery to reduce malnutrition in Sindh.

To strengthen the capacities of local CSOs to engage in advocacy and policy dialogue at the provincial level and in implementation and monitoring of local development plans and programmes , specifically including.
Strengthened CSO organizational capacity related to internal governance, project implementation, financial management and advocacy and accountability.
Key Activities
- Mapping of CBOs/CSOs.
- Stakeholder Engagement Sessions at district level.
- CSOs’ Organizational Capacity Assessment.
- Organizational Growth and Challenge Plan (OGCP) Development.
- Providing organizational development assistance to CSOs.
- Revitalization of District Committee for Coordination on Nutrition.
- Promotion of CSO networks at district, provincial and national level through networking and alliance building.
- Organizing Provincial and district level conferences, debates and seminars.
- Supporting and promoting the development of a two ways accountability mechanism between CSOs and the Government.
- Enabling civil society participation in and contribution to policy dialogue and decision making processes at district and provincial levels.
Strengthened CSO sector specific technical, research, analysis, and advocacy capacity.
Key Activities
- Capacity building for CSO with a focus on nutrition related topics.
- Subgrants to the selected CSO to develop and implement small pilot projects for nutrition.
- Workshops and seminar promoting inter sectoral approach to nutrition combining nutrition specific and nutrition sensitive actions.
- Promoting awareness among CSOs of nutrition related policies and Poverty Reduction Strategy at Provincial and Federal level.
To improve capacity of CSOs in nutrition related social services delivery.
Strengthened facility based treatment through skills enhancement, regarding acute malnutrition (SAM) as per protocols in the targeted districts and linkage to other healthcare programs.

- Joint planning with stakeholders at districts and provincial level
- Conduct Training Needs Assessment (TNA) and develop training plans.
- Conduct various thematic and competency based training for staff and stakeholders.
- Strengthen nutrition surveillance system (IDSR) at district level.
- Strengthen supply chain management system.
- Support facility based OTP, SFP and Stabilization Centres for provision of CMAM services.
Outreach enhanced through skills acquired, to facilitate preventions/ treatment of undernutrition and behavior change activities for identification and referral of cases.

- Mapping & capacity assessment of LHWs, CMWs, and CBOs in targeted district.
- Capacity building workshops and continuous feedback and mentoring support for LHWs, CMWs & CBO, volunteers on screening and treatment of SAM through simplified approach.
- Revitalizing and capacity building of Community Health Committees (CHCs).
- Adolescent Nutrition Champions in Schools.
- Establishment and capacity building of Peer Support Groups.
Increased awareness among the general public on Nutrition in Sindh..

- Join and participate or plan and implement Nutrition focused mobilization campaigns, webinars and Village Theatre/Puppet shows.
