District-Level University Debate
Strengthening Participatory Organization (SPO), in partnership with the International Rescue Committee (IRC), hosted district-level debates at public universities and colleges in Sukkur, Khairpur, Ghotki, Naushahro Feroz, and Kashmore. These debates aimed to raise awareness about malnutrition, its root causes, and the importance of collective action. The initiative brought together university students, faculty members, local civil society organizations (CSOs), and nutrition stakeholders to address the pressing challenges surrounding malnutrition in Sindh. The primary objectives were to explore the causes of malnutrition and raise public awareness on nutrition policies, governance, and service delivery. The debates focused on vital topics such as the role of education in combating malnutrition, poverty’s impact, the effectiveness of government subsidies, and the role of healthcare services.
The district-level debates engaged around 100 participants at each location, including students, professors, CSO representatives, and nutrition stakeholders. The event began with a welcome address and an overview of the debate’s goals. Students were encouraged to participate in debates on their assigned topics, such as whether education and awareness contribute to preventing malnutrition or if government subsidies are effective in reducing its prevalence. The debates were well-researched and facilitated by SPO’s district teams, ensuring a dynamic exchange of ideas. A “Wall of Issues” allowed participants to document key challenges and propose innovative solutions. The debates concluded with a jury awarding prizes for the best-performing groups, who were recognized for their arguments and presentation skills.
This initiative not only raised awareness about malnutrition but also empowered university students and local communities to advocate for better nutrition policies and services. It encouraged leadership and activism among youth, fostering a sense of responsibility for addressing societal issues. By engaging universities, CSOs, and policymakers, the debates laid the groundwork for sustainable solutions to malnutrition in Sindh, exemplifying the importance of collaboration and youth engagement in driving change.
